Mt. Pinneshiri
This spot can be accessed from Mt. Apoi or from the trailhead to Mt. Pinneshiri on the northern side. Climbers coming from Mt. Apoi will have passed a place where bamboo grass grows thickly in contrast to the vegetation of the surrounding areas. Although Mt. Pinneshiri and other peaks in the Apoi Mountains consist of peridotite, metamorphic rocks are distributed along a fault between Mt. Yoshida and Mt. Pinneshiri. The varying geological features here have led to the growth of different vegetation types.
The name Pinneshiri is derived from the Ainu term Pinne-sir (meaning "male land"), which pairs with Mt. Apoi because the latter is considered to be derived from Matne-sir (meaning "female land").
