Physical characteristics:
This perennial grows to approximately 50 cm in height. The stem leaves are deeply divided into five lobes, with each lobe further divided into linear-lanceolate segments. The flowers grow at the tips of the stem and branches. A distinctive feature of this plant is the absence of hairs on the stamens.
Blooming period:
mid-August to early October
Habitat:
from the foothills to the upper areas
Other information:
a quasi-endemic variant species. Ezotorikabuto (Aconitum sachalinense subsp. yezoense) can be found at the trailhead of Mt. Pinneshiri.
Japanese name origin:
The name “torikabuto” comes from the flower’s resemblance in shape to a ceremonial helmet of the same name that was worn by traditional Japanese court musicians.
